Links are provided to sites which we believe offer sound information even if limited to some particular objective and so not very useful to you as an individual searcher. If there is no link, this means that we advise you pay no attention to it: the address has been given only by way of example. The reference to Gordon Binder's 'Science Lessons' (Harvard Business Press 2008, ISBN 978-1-59139-861-5) is different, being to a book, not a website. As a business man and not a scientist, he explains very well the inability of pharmaceutical companies to respond to new thinking, see especially pages 126-8. www.cancerresearchuk.org and www.cancer.co.uk Both these links lead to the main page for Cancer Research UK, an organisation which raises the money it needs on a charity basis and carries out research both in its own laboratories and by way of grants to other people. In its research, CRUK is absolutely excellent, no-one better in the world. This site tries to be all things to all people; pulls too many punches in areas where blunt truth might be better. All the same it can be a good starting-point for some kinds of detailed search. It depends what you are looking for. www.cancer.org From the American Cancer Society. You may find the site to be rather similar to that of CRUK, though not as good. www.cancer.gov From the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health of the USA. They are not looking for money (being funded by the US government) and as a research body they are absolutely excellent. The site is hard work. www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/cancer This is a large site dedicated to educating people about many features of quack treatments: we have chosen, obviously, the page on cancer "treatments". It is strongly recommended. cancer.com This site to Ortho Biotech Products (commercial), and was recently 'upgraded'. cancermed.com An advertising site for a private clinic that emphasises an alternative medicine treatment for cancer, 'neoplastons' (c.f. Quackwatch) cancerinfo.biz This site could not be reached on the most recent trial, before that it was about mesothelioma and how to sue for compensation. A lawyers' advertising site. cancerinfo.net Sanofi Aventis. Commercial, but it seeks to be objective, helpful and informative. cancerinfo.us “This page is parked free, courtesy of GoDaddy.com” Thankyou GoDaddy, but the material presented on the site has not been properly vetted and much of it is rubbish. cancerinfo.co.uk It formerly handled some pure quackery and now includes lawyers' advertising about mesothelioma, but there are at least some links to reputable bodies. www.cancerwise.org From the University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center which may well be the most advanced cancer hospital in the world; in fact it must be true because their people all say so and are convinced that this tremendous concentration of talent and resources is the best way forward. The only counter-argument we might make is that perhaps there is an alternative without so much expensive machinery. Their site is impressive but tries too hard to please everyone.
